Meet The Poppy Pair

After a set of American Mah Jongg tiles sparked an obsession, mother-daughter duo Melody and Kristen created The Poppy Pair. What began with games among friends and family soon grew into monthly “Mahj at Mel’s” gatherings, thoughtfully styled tablescapes, and lasting memories made around the table.

We both love the beauty, tradition, strategy, and friendships that make American Mah Jongg so special. Our goal is to make the game feel welcoming and approachable for everyone—especially those who are curious about learning but do not know where to begin. Through beginner-friendly classes, guided play, private group instruction, and social events at thoughtfully selected venues throughout Columbus and Central Ohio, we help players learn with confidence in a relaxed and encouraging setting.

As a retired teacher and an Oh My Mahjong Certified Mahji Mentor, Melody creates clear, step-by-step lessons that build a strong understanding of the game. Kristen brings a natural eye for patterns and connections, helping players learn to read the tiles, strengthen their hands, and move closer to confidently calling “Mah Jongg!” Together, we bring patience, encouragement, and a genuine love of teaching to every experience.

More than anything, we hope to create opportunities for people to learn something new, connect with others, and enjoy meaningful time together. We truly believe the best memories and friendships are made where friends gather around the table.
