Mahj 101: Learn the Foundations of American Mah Jongg

New to American Mah Jongg? Start here. Mahj 101 is designed for brand-new players and anyone who would like a comfortable refresher on the basics. You’ll learn the tiles, terminology, National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) card, Charleston, basic rules, and flow of play through welcoming instruction and hands-on practice.

No experience is needed — just come ready to learn, ask questions, and begin building the confidence to play around the table.

What You’ll Learn in Mahj 101

Mahj 101 is our beginner American Mah Jongg class, designed to help you understand the game step by step and feel comfortable around the table.

Learn the Tiles & NMJL Card

Get familiar with the suits, honors, jokers, and common American Mah Jongg terminology. We’ll also introduce the National Mah Jongg League card and show you how to begin reading it.

Understand the Charleston & Basic Rules

Learn how the Charleston works, what tiles are passed, how turns progress, and the basics of drawing, discarding, calling tiles, exposures, jokers, and winning a hand.

Put It Together with Guided Play

Practice what you’ve learned around the table with supportive instruction, plenty of time for questions, and hands-on guidance as you begin building and playing a hand.

Dates, locations, and pricing vary by session. Mahj 101 classes are offered at selected venues throughout Central Ohio. Grove City is sold out, and registration is now open at Blend of Seven Winery in Marion.
